KMT: Support Hong Kong to Maintain Freedom and Democracy & the Early Implementation of Double General Elections

KMT Cultural and Communications Committee

Press Release

Sunday, May 24, 2020

In response to the Hong Kong people protesting the "Hong Kong National Security Law" on the streets today (May 24), where hundreds were arrested by the Hong Kong police, the KMT indicates that it has always supported Hong Kong to maintain freedom and democracy that is different from the Mainland, as well as the early implementation of “double general elections”, and expresses sincere concern about the social unrest caused by the large-scale protests in Hong Kong.

In recent years, changes in human rights and freedoms in Hong Kong have attracted great attention from outside circles. The KMT believes that the Hong Kong Government and the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) authorities ought to establish communication channels with the protesters as soon as possible, in order to maintain the stability in Hong Kong.

The KMT also believes that in order to implement the CCP authorities’ commitment to “Hong Kong people administering Hong Kong” and “a high degree of autonomy”, with respect to the “draft Decision on Establishing and Improving Legal System and Enforcement Mechanisms for Hong Kong Special Administrative Region to Safeguard National Security”, the CCP authorities ought to communicate with the various circles in Hong Kong. CCP authorities must face that democracy in Hong Kong is evidently different from that in the Chinese Mainland, therefore only full communication can produce effective calibration.

The KMT states that the CCP authorities’ respect and protection of Hong Kong’s freedom and democracy, as well as by separately legislating rules governing the operating system for the Hong Kong region in the name of “national security”, will not only concern the future of Hong Kong, but also affect the direction of cross-Strait relations. In addition to calling on the CCP authorities not to misjudge the potential political and economic impacts caused by this incident, the KMT also calls on all groups and people in Taiwan who are concerned about the stability of Hong Kong and the rights and interests of Hong Kong people to give the greatest attention, and urge the DPP government to take necessary actions that the ruling party of the Republic of China ought to take.

The KMT demands that the DPP government provide as much assistance to Taiwan compatriots in Hong Kong as possible to avoid the impact of social unrest in Hong Kong. Relevant practices should be explained to the people of Taiwan at all times.

Finally, the KMT would like to emphasize that Taiwan and Hong Kong cannot be compared and the KMT will strongly oppose, in accordance with the Constitution of the Republic of China, the "one country, two systems" applied to Hong Kong and Macao by the CCP authorities
