Former KMT Government Maintained Ban on US Pork Imports
While Still Maintaining Robust ROC-US Relationship
Economic Minister Wang Mei-Hua’s (王美花) recently stated that if we never lift the ban on US pork,
we will never be able to advance our relationship with the US. In response, the
Kuomintang (KMT) today (9/28) emphasized the fact that President Tsai has still
not made it clear what we will acquire and how our international presence will
benefit from lifting the ban on US pork containing ractopamine residue
(racto-pork) imports. In addition, the people also question why the former KMT
Government could position themselves differently towards imports of US beef and
pork, exclude animal offal from
the list of permitted import items, and improve our relationship with the US
simultaneously. However, the current DPP government, as far as we are
concerned, fails to do so.
Additionally, Minister Wang said that as long as US
racto-pork can actually pass food inspection, “it is, as a matter of common
sense, edible.” In this case, the KMT would like to ask her to consult with the
Ministry of Education as to why US racto-pork is still banned in schools, and
to inquire with the Council of Agriculture as to why the usage of ractopamine
is not permitted for raising pigs in Taiwan. According to Minister Wang’s
logic, none of the policies implemented by the Ministry of Education, the
Council of Agriculture, and the Ministry of Health & Welfare make sense at
all! The KMT urges the people of Taiwan to express our firm rejection of
racto-pork by participating in our nationwide referendum to counter the DPP
government’s decision to open the country to US racto-pork. The KMT also calls
on President Tsai Ing-wen and her ranking officials to stop contradicting
themselves and start making actual sense!
