The KMT’s Response to the Disappearance of Lee Meng-chu

KMT Culture and Communications Committee

October 12, 2020

Yesterday (10/11), Mainland Chinese media released press reports accusing Lee Meng-chu, an advisor to the Fangliao Township government in Pingtung County, of being a “Taiwanese spy”. In the press release, the Mainland media also brought up hundreds of other Taiwanese spy cases. The Kuomintang (KMT) expresses concern over the situation and calls on the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) to think of ways to negotiate with full force, so that the innocent can return to Taiwan as soon as possible. The KMT hopes relevant Mainland departments will sufficiently guarantee that the rights of affected parties are protected. Furthermore, these departments should proceed in a transparent and open manner while following procedural justice standards to properly handle related cases.

The KMT’s cross-Strait policy report, released at the party’s National Congress held on September 6, appeals to officials on both sides of the Taiwan Strait not to disrupt people-to-people exchanges, which is an integral part of cross-Strait communication. The report also advocates for the guaranteed protection of the personal freedoms and basic rights of Taiwanese people in Mainland China, as well as the ceasing of discrimination towards Mainland Chinese people in Taiwan. All affected ROC citizens, including the detained Lee Meng-chu, a Taiwanese who allegedly engaged in espionage activities, should be treated with judicial rights and cases should be based on the presumption of innocence. These are mutual judicial beliefs and values on both sides of the Taiwan Strait.

The KMT is concerned about the deterioration of cross-Strait relations, which is causing those travelling between the two sides to feel a greater sense of fear each passing day. Against KMT wishes, the probability that cross-Strait relations spiral out of control is increasing every day. The KMT also requests the DPP government to act in accordance with Paragraph 12 of the Agreement on Cross-Strait Joint Crime-Fighting and Mutual Judicial Assistance to assist relatives of detainees in visiting them, and to think of ways to negotiate with full force, so that the innocent can return to Taiwan as soon as possible, and to provide a thorough explanation to the people of the ROC to show the government’s commitment to ensuring the safety of its citizens.
