CTiTV News Channel License Renewal Rejected; Freedom of the Press on Taiwan Gravely Undermined

Regarding the National Communications Commission’s (NCC) decision to refuse license renewal to Chung T'ien Television (CTiTV), the Kuomintang (KMT) emphasized today (Nov. 18th) that the results of this censorship confirm society’s questions regarding the authorities meddling with freedom of the press. President Tsai Ing-wen’s closing of the news channel will regrettably cause a chilling effect on the media, limit freedom of speech, and lead to grave deterioration of press freedom on Taiwan.

The KMT also emphasized that Taiwan’s fecund environment of respect for news reporting freedom was hard-won. Furthermore, the media’s supervisory power causes Taiwan’s democracy to develop along open and transparent lines. However, regarding this CTiTV license renewal fiasco, numerous individuals from all walks of society questioned whether the NCC censorship was for the sake of eliminating dissident voices and involvement. This has caused the NCC’s fairness and objectivity to become widely criticized, especially since the NCC revealed its biased, premeditated perspective over the course of the investigation. This bias will indubitably cause the majority of Taiwanese public opinion to reject the results of this censorship.

The KMT believes that the propaganda spewed by the authorities in office and the show put on by the NCC before this fiasco of an investigation caused all levels of society to feel that there is nothing out of the ordinary about the results of this censorship. However, the ruling party should reflect on shutting down a news channel and the harm this shutdown has on Taiwan’s long-standing open society and freedom of the press. Employing the power of the administration to meddle with the standpoints of news media will only turn Taiwan into a society where a single person has all the say. This course of events is utterly detrimental to the quotidian development of democracy on Taiwan.
