KMT expresses concerns about deteriorating Covid-19 situation in India and calls for emergency humanitarian assistance

Recently, the COVID-19 situation in India has deteriorated, and the country is facing a severe shortage of medical supplies. The Department of International Affairs of the Kuomintang (KMT) has urged the DPP government to provide necessary assistance to expatriates and our diplomatic personnel in India, saying that the government should immediately negotiate with India through diplomatic channels so that the ROC can provide emergency humanitarian aid when necessary

The KMT Department of International Affairs indicates that Indian society has always been friendly to us. The Indian government recently donated funds to the Ministry of Health and Welfare to support research on Chinese medicine and expressed sympathy for victims of tragic Hualien train derailment that killed 49 on April.. Unfortunately, the pandemic has deteriorated in India, which saw a record one-day jump with more than 300,000 new Covid-19 cases. . Many countries have agreed to provide medical equipment such as oxygen tanks. However, we haven’t yet seen the DPP government taking actions in response. The Department of International Affair of the KMT stresses three points regarding the situation:

(1)The Kuomintang has long maintained a close and mutually helpful partnership with the Indian government and the public. KMT Chairman Johnny Chiang (江啟臣), former Chairmen Ma Ying-jeou (馬英九), Chu Lil-luan (朱立倫), and Wu Denyih (吳敦義) have visited India several times and have paid great attention to the situation in India. The Department of International Affairs of the KMT learned from various sources that many of KMT’s friends were unfortunately infected during the pandemic. We want to express our sincerest concerns about this and look forward to the recovery of our Indian friends.

(2) Although the number of Taiwanese expatriates in India is relatively small, their work and life have obviously been greatly affected. We believe that the DPP government should be more active in extending our hands to Taiwanese expatriates in India and properly assist them in responding to the pandemic. The last thing we want to see is Taiwanese expatriates becoming overseas orphans due to the pandemic. The KMT expresses concerns for the government personnel stationed on the front line abroad as well as their relatives, hoping that everything goes well with them.

(3)Based on the spirit of humanity, the KMT urges the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Health and Welfare to immediately conduct diplomatic consultations so that they can integrate resources in the private sectors and provide necessary medical supplies for India as quickly as possible.
