Evasion of Supervision is Unhelpful to Prevent COVID-19; KMT Calls for Announcement of Vaccine Acquisition Schedule ASAP

Kuomintang (KMT) has stated that insufficient vaccine stocks was the result of the Tsai government’s negligence towards preventing the epidemic. President Tsai Ing-wen promoted "Vaccines are available, please rest assured!" on Facebook in early February, saying that the government purchased vaccines from multiple sources and planned to obtain nearly 20 million doses. So far, however, Taiwan has only obtained 300,000 doses, far lower than the amount promised, and not enough for all the people of the country to be inoculated.

KMT emphasized that people already gave the Tsai government enough time for its promises. However, after waiting for a long time, the number of vaccines has not significantly increased. Now, as the COVID-19 pandemic is rapidly heating up, and the demand for vaccines is rising, the imbalance between supply and demand will only become more problematic.

KMT has said that insufficient vaccine purchases have a wide range of impacts, including existing vaccines that will expire at the end of this month or the middle of next month, and the arrival date for the third batch of vaccines is still unclear. This has led to a wait-and-see attitude towards the inoculation of vaccines; however, as infections continue to rise, the government needs to speed up vaccine purchases, rather than avoiding opposition party’s supervision.

KMT has reiterated that the increase in the rate of inoculation means that there is a high demand for the vaccine, and it is important to obtain a sufficient number of safe doses as soon as possible. As to the fact that the Tsai government has failed to clearly state a timeline for obtaining the vaccine in coming months, KMT has called on the government to be more transparent, as any responsible government should do.
