Asians in U.S. Repeatedly Attacked - KMT Expresses Regret and Concerns

Since last year, Asians have repeatedly suffered various physical and psychological attacks because of the political effects from the raging COVID-19 pandemic in the US. The Kuomintang (KMT) deeply regrets this and expresses our concerns.

Last year alone, there were nearly 3,800 attacks in the U.S. due to "Asian hate." The US Constitution states that “all people are equal regardless of race.” This is not only consistent with the spirit of the Republic of China (ROC), but also similar to the KMT’s belief in ethnic integration. The KMT sincerely hopes that all ethnic groups in the U.S. can abandon stereotypes towards each other and live side by side peacefully. This is especially important when the COVID-19 pandemic returns as people around world should unite and cooperate to eliminate any future pandemic.

The KMT emphasized that May is traditionally designated as “Asian Pacific American Heritage Month” in the U.S. Since Biden was sworn in on January 20th, many officials in the administration have affirmed the contributions of Asian Americans in the U.S. The KMT affirmed this and hopes that the Biden administration will adopt measures to actively protect personal property and safety of Asian people in the U.S.

The KMT calls on President Tsai Ing-wen to pay more attention to the safety of our nationals and expatriates overseas, especially when the personal safety of Asian Americans appears to be deteriorating and the COVID-19 pandemic continues in many countries. When necessary, the Tsai administration should express our country’s concerns to the U.S. government through diplomatic or related channels.

The KMT also requested that the DPP government provide additional, timely care and encouragement to officials stationed abroad to implement standard operating procedures for pandemic prevention in overseas missions, and provide adequate safety protection measures as soon as possible, including vaccinations. Please do not let them feel like “there is no reward for merits, but there must be punishment for demerits.”
