The KMT Extends Deep Gratitude to Japan for Sending 1.24 million Doses of the AZ Vaccine to Help Taiwan Fight the Pandemic

The Kuomintang (KMT) expresses its sincere gratitude to Japan for its kindness to Taiwan as its donated 1.24 million doses of Astra Zeneca Covid-19 vaccine arrives this afternoon (June 4) at Taoyuan Airport. Japan’s timely help when Taiwan remains in dire need of vaccines reflects the long-term and profound friendship between our two countries. And for that, the Taiwanese people will be forever grateful.

Japan’s foreign minister Toshimitsu Motegi notes that in donating the vaccine, Japan is effectively returning the favor of Taiwan’s unwavering support for the country in the aftermath of the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake. The KMT notes that President Ma Ying-jeou (馬英九) personally attended the "Believe in Hope – Fight & Smile" fundraising telethon to aid Japan in the wake of the multi-pronged disaster there and help racked up more than 6 billion NT dollars in total, the largest source of overseas fund-raising for Japan. This exemplified our citizens’ warmth and generosity- and indeed, this helped cement an unbreakable friendship between Taiwan and Japan.

The KMT stresses that Taiwan’s current vaccination rate is among the lowest in the world. Count Japan’s donations, and Taiwan now has about 2 million doses of the Covid-19 vaccine in storage, far below the estimated 30 million doses needed to achieve herd immunity. Ergo, Taiwan is still in dire need of vaccines. Given that the virus has yet to show any signs of receding, the KMT hopes that in addition to thanking international friends for their help, the Tsai administration must continue to “open the door and embrace goodwill”- that is, accept civil and international assistance. In so doing, Taiwan can secure more vaccines and alleviate the suffering of the Taiwanese people in the pandemic.

Further, the KMT notes that Taiwan not only needs the international community’s aids; the administration must do its part and jettison its complacency and insularity. For our civil groups' spontaneous purchase and donations of vaccines, our leaders should be grateful and willing to assist their efforts. Meantime, the administration, instead of being patronizing and deliberately placing obstacles, should work to speed up the administrative procedures regarding vaccine procurements. It behooves the Tsai administration to figure out the means to acquire adequate, safe, and internationally certified vaccines- and along the way, review its vaccine strategies and make necessary adjustments. Better late than never, the administration must set forth a sound, effective, and feasible vaccine policy to reassure Taiwan’s citizens.
