Lee Chia-fei (李佳霏), deputy spokesperson of the Presidential Office, stated yesterday that President Ma Ying-jeou (馬英九) welcomed the Codex Alimentarius Commission’s decision to adopt global food safety standards for ractopamine residue, adding that the government would formulate regulations on permissible quantities of ractopamine residue in US beef imports in accordance with the international standards. She went on to say that President Ma also hoped that the dispute over US beef imports could be solved as soon as possible so that talks under the Trade and Investment Framework Agreement (TIFA) between Taiwan and the US, which had been suspended for five years, could be resumed at an earlier date, accelerating Taiwan’s bid to participate in regional economic integration.
Earlier on the same day, President Ma also stated that the Republic of China was seeking to accede to the US-led Trans-Pacific Strategic Economic Partnership Agreement (TPP) in the future, which he said would be a very important step forward in the country’s trade liberalization. However, he noted, Taiwan was not adequately prepared, so “we need to continue to make further preparations.”
