On his way to Central America to visit two of the Republic of China’s diplomatic allies, Vice President Wu Deng-yih (吳敦義) arrived in New York on August 13 for a transit stop. Raymond Burghardt, chairman of the American Institute in Taiwan, boarded the plane to welcome Wu, and the US government also extended Wu expedited immigration clearance as a courtesy. This will be the first time that Wu has visited a Latin American ally on behalf of President Ma Ying-jeou (馬英九) since he took office on May 20.
After a two-day stay in New York, Wu is scheduled to fly to the Dominican Republic on August 15, where he will take part in the Presidential inauguration of Danilo Medina, scheduled for August 16. After that, Wu will also visit Belize and make a transit stop in Los Angeles on his return trip to Taiwan. Wu is accompanied by several cabinet members, including Timothy Yang (楊進添), Foreign Minister, Wang Ju-hsuan (王如玄), Chairwoman of the Council of Labor Affairs, and Wu Ying-yi (吳英毅), Chairman of the Overseas Chinese Affairs Commission.
