Chen Shui-bian: I Accepted Instructions from AIT for 8 Years

Former President Chen Shui-bian had an attorney bring a suit against US President Barack Obama and Defense Secretary Robert Gates, demanding that the US President reinstate “US military courts” in Taiwan and release him from custody, leaving the public in a state of shock.

In his petition, Chen Shui-bian pointed out, “During my term of office, I accepted the instructions of the Chairman of the American Institute in Taiwan on many occasions, even when their instructions interfered with my Presidential decision-making.”

Dr. Jonathan H. Levy, Esq., Chen’s attorney in the US, also stated, “Chen Shui-bian had been an agent of the US Military Government for Taiwan, and accepted the US Government’s instructions. Therefore, he should be viewed as an officer of the US military.” However, Levy also stated, “The only acceptable outcome of the petition is to secure Chen Shui-bian’s immediate release either through intervention by the US military or any other means. We are not discussing the sovereignty of Taiwan, but an individual.”

A political commentator pointed out that the absurdity of Chen Shui-bian’s legal defense strategy were unprecedented in the political history of any country.

DPP leaders, who have disagreed with Chen on the status of Taiwan, were shocked to hear of him calling himself an agent of the U.S. military government. Lawmaker Tsai Huang-liang, DPP legislative caucus deputy whip, said, "every one of us was shocked."

"Perhaps, he wanted to do something in desperation," Tsai said. "Or maybe his attorney has just cooked it up, he added.
