Tsai Ting-Kuei, chairman of the Taiwan Association of University Professors (TAUP), said on October 17 that the “Taiwan National Assembly” would hold an overnight protest on October 24 on Ketagalan Boulevard in front of the Presidential Palace. The theme of the protest would be to call for the toppling of the Republic of China, as it was a “government in exile.”
Earlier, former President Chen Shu-bian released a statement through his retirement office on October 14, declaring that recognizing the Republic of China was tantamount to agreeing with the idea that “Taiwan is a part of China” and “ultimately, the two sides of the Strait have to be reunified.” Consequently, Chen stated that the idea that the ROC possessed sovereignty over Taiwan had to be unequivocally denied so that a new and independent country could be established in Taiwan.
The planned protest of the “Taiwan National Assembly” is intended to echo Chen’s statement. Moreover, October 25 is Taiwan Retrocession Day, which commemorates the official restoration of Taiwan to the ROC and the end of Japanese rule over the island on October 25, 1945. By staging its overnight protest on the eve of this annual observance, the “Taiwan National Assembly” hopes to highlight the issue of Taiwan’s sovereignty.
