Taiwan Wins the Gold in International Physics and Chemistry Olympiads

The 41st International Physics Olympiad (IPHO) was concluded on July 25th in Zagreb, Croatia. The competition brought together 410 students from 82 countries or regions. Taiwan won 5 gold medals and ranked 3rd, just after Mainland China and Thailand. Taiwan had sent 5 high school students to participate in the IPHO and all of them won gold medals.
The Education Ministry stated that Taiwan had participated in the IPHO since 1994, earning a total of 37 gold, 19 silver, and 18 bronze medals as well as 8 honorable mention awards. Taiwan’s has ranked, on average, in the top five among the competing nations or regions over the last 10 years, the Education Ministry added.
Furthermore, the 42nd International Chemistry Olympiad (ICHO) was concluded on July 27th in Tokyo, with Taiwan winning 2 gold and 2 silver medals, ranking fourth place among the 68 countries or regions competing. There were 267 high school students from 68 countries or regions competing at the ICHO this year.
Fang Tai-Shan, the National Taiwan Normal University chemistry professor who led the Taiwan delegation, stated that he was satisfied with the students’ accomplishments. He pointed out that Taiwan’s students took home 2 gold and 2 silver medals, on par with previous years. Fang went on to say that the average grade of Taiwan’s four participants was 89, ranking Taiwan in the top 5 among the nations competing in the ICHO and maintaining Taiwan’s first-class scholastic reputation.
