KMT Announces It Will
No Longer Participate in the 12th Cross-Strait Forum as An Official Political
Party
KMT Culture and Communications Committee
September 14, 2020
The KMT (Kuomintang)
announced today (9/14) that the KMT Delegation to the 12th Cross-Strait Forum,
due to the entire cross-Strait atmosphere having become unfavorable for
bilateral exchange and dialogue, has decided not to participate in the forum as
an official political party.
The KMT, for the sake
of opening a window to peaceful cross-Strait dialogue and promoting mutually
beneficial non-governmental communication, thus followed past precedent and
accepted the mainland's invitation, originally announcing on September 8th that,
with former Legislative Yuan President Wang Jin-pyng serving as KMT head
delegate and Secretary-General Lee Chien-Lung serving as deputy head delegate,
it would incipiently attend the 12th Cross-Strait Forum.
The KMT states that
cross-Strait relations are complex and sensitive, so any sort of insolent
comment or behavior is enough for accumulated goodwill and mutual trust to
become gravely injured. The KMT has long advocated for equal and dignified
cross-Strait exchange and has contributed to cross-Strait mutual trust and
peace. The KMT remains benevolent, and will continue to strive for cross-Strait
exchange and dialogue.
The KMT expresses
gratitude towards the groups and individual people who have invested their
energies into this exchange event. We hope the Cross-Strait Forum exchanges are
smooth and successful.
