KMT: Economics Minister Wang Mei-Hua Must Step Down Immediately for Bad Faith
Once again, forced power outages swept across Taiwan. “Four days after the last power failure at Hsinta (興達) Power Plant, Taipower company again subjected the Taiwanese people to a large-scale power outage,” the Kuomintang (KMT) said this evening (5/17).
People are suffering from power and water shortage, and the blackout every other day suggests Taiwan’s power operating reserve isn’t remotely as adequate as the government has claimed it is. Further, the outrageous farce on display over the last couple of days underlines the incompetence and deficiencies of DPP’s energy policy. The result, unfortunately, is Taiwan has to endure power shortages while battling Covid-19, no less. Ergo, the KMT is vehemently demanding Wang Mei-Hua (王美花) resign as Economics Minister.
The KMT points out the Tsai administration has repeatedly equivocated or outright lied about power shortage. In the aftermath of the 513 Blackout, the executive branch even made a chart touting Taiwan’s power stability and security. Ironically enough, four days later, Taiwan once again slumped into a blackout. The central government has sullied its credibility. The Tsai administration has proven unable to preserve Taiwan’s energy security, sidestepped the incontrovertible truth of our power shortage, and betrayed Taiwanese citizens’ trust.
With infections on the rise nationwide, many are understandably staying at home per the health authorities, as is welcome by the KMT. But even when hunkered down at home to stave off Covid-19, our citizens still have to endure unnotified power interruption at scorching night. The KMT calls upon the DPP to disclose the power operating reserve capacity. Meantime, the DPP must also expressly tell our citizens when the power stability can be fully restored. The last time Taiwan’s power went out without warning and President Tsai apologized to our citizens. Yet four days later, it's deja vu all over again. This time, apologies from the powers that be won’t do much good. Instead, for accountability’s sake, the Economics Minister must step down.
